Graphic designer Tony Brook developed 12 source designs based around the numbers 96 and 16.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, design magazine Wallpaper* worked with FE Burman to produce 220,000 posters.

The project utilised HP’s SmartStream Mosaic software to make every poster unique, with the results printed on Burman’s Indigo 10000 B2 digital press. Every copy of the September 2016 issue included two 8pp posters, which were printed, die cut and folded by the firm to enable them to be bound into the issue.

‘We wanted to create something special and unique that would impact each of our readers on a personal level,’ said Wallpaper* creative director Sarah Douglas. ‘The idea came from a brainstorm with FE Burman. It is a designer’s dream to be able to create this many original artworks. Working on this project has inspired us to totally rethink our attitude and approach to print technology and the printing process.’

Graphic designer Tony Brook of Spin developed a series of 12 source designs based around the numbers 96 and 16. The Mosaic software was used to control and vary the colours and gradations to introduce the variability between each sheet.

‘It was important for us that each poster had its own character, but that overall they hung together,’ said Mr Brook.

FE Burman has been experimenting with HP’s Mosaic technology for the past nine months, including working closely with the developers in Israel to understand how to make the most of the creative capabilities.

‘The readership of Wallpaper* are just the sort of people who can really see where Mosaic is of value,’ said FE Burman owner Michael Burman, adding that the firm had already been contacted about other projects using the technology as a result of the project.
