A prototype B2 format sheetfed UV inkjet press will be shown at drupa by French digital press and finishing manufacturer MGI Digital Graphic Technology. Commercial release is planned for 2013.

Called Alphajet, it will offer variable data printing in six colours (with UV cured inks) plus spot UV coating, with resolutions up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, at up to 3000 sheets per hour. It takes sheets up to 520 x 740 mm in weights up to 500 g/m2, suggesting a role in carton production. The likely costs have not yet been announced.

The technology builds on the company’s previous experience in developing the B2 format JetVarnish inkjet UV coater and the JetCard full colour UV inkjet for plastic cards.

According to MGI, ‘The Alphajet B2 sheetfed digital inkjet press effectively bridges the gap between the advantages of offset (speeds, accuracy and quality) and the benefits of digital technologies (on-demand, no make ready and variable data), while providing the same flexibility and versatility that is a hallmark of all MGI’s digital solutions.’

Last month MGI announced its majority acquisition of German components manufacturer Kora-Packmat to form MGI Group. The company’s UK distributor is MGI Technologies in Hemel Hempstead.
