Purchasers of the QuarkXPress 9 layout program are being offered a free copy of the latest Markzware file format converter, PDF2DTP, which sells for £179. This applies to both new copies of XPress and upgrades to version 9.

PDF2DTP is a new XTension for QuarkXPress that enables designers to turn any PDF into an editable QuarkXPress 9 project. This is believed to be the first tool of its kind to work with PDFs and supports both Mac and Windows platforms.

Previously Markzware has developed native layout program converters that can for example convert between Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress formats (called either ID2Q or Q2ID depending on which way you need to convert), or from Microsoft Publisher to InDesign (called PUB2ID). However the ability to edit PDFs in a standard layout program has never been possible in the past from any supplier, except in a limited way by opening them into Adobe Illustrator.

The company said that PDF2DTP solves the problem where a document needs to be edited but the native layout file is not available. It removes the issues associated with finding or recreating images, layers, transparencies, fonts, colours, and styles by turning PDFs into QuarkXPress 9 files. The software converts all types of PDFs to editable XPress 9 documents with one click, dramatically reducing the time and costs associated with recreating content. It will also extract the images embedded within most PDFs and saves them in a separate folder.

From now until 30th September 2012 all new purchases of and upgrades to QuarkXPress 9 will include a copy of PDF2DTP for free.
