Hybrid Software Helix has announced the release of SmartDFE Version 6, a new version of its digital front end (DFE) platform for high-speed digital presses.
The release adds GPU-native processing to the platform, alongside updates to colour management, automation and operator workflows. Hybrid Software Helix will demonstrate the new version at Loupe Americas, taking place 15–17 September in Chicago, US.
SmartDFE is designed as a modular software platform for print OEMs developing digital press solutions. The system covers functions including job creation and workflow, RIP, screening and printhead drive electronics, with the company positioning its architecture as a way for manufacturers to accelerate development while retaining the ability to customise their systems.
A key change in Version 6 is the addition of GPU-native processing to Harlequin Direct, the platform’s RIP technology. Press manufacturers can now select between CPU-native and GPU-native RIP cores depending on their performance, cost and application requirements.
According to Hybrid Software Helix, the GPU-native RIP executes the rendering pipeline directly on the GPU rather than offloading individual operations. The company says the new approach maintains Harlequin’s existing rendering quality, APIs and workflow compatibility.
In tests using variable data customer files, Hybrid Software Helix reports that the GPU-native RIP achieved rendering speeds up to 30 times faster than the CPU-native version.
Version 6 also introduces a redesigned Job Editor, incorporating GPU-native rendering to accelerate previews and thumbnails. The company says this is intended to provide a more responsive interface when operators are working with complex PDF files.
“Press manufacturers should not have to choose between getting to market quickly and creating something that is uniquely theirs,” said Justin Bailey, managing director of Hybrid Software Helix. “That principle has always been central to SmartDFE. Version 6 gives OEMs even greater flexibility to optimise and differentiate their press solutions as their performance requirements evolve, especially when printing variable data PDF files.”
Other changes in SmartDFE Version 6 include enhanced spot colour management, expanded colour libraries and improved PrintFlat integration. The release also broadens support for 16-bit workflows and adds further OPC UA capabilities for automation and factory integration.
For operators, the update includes faster application start-up, improved queue management and search functions, as well as a range of workflow and usability changes.
