Renewable, tactile, sustainable and works in a power cut, paper now has a new addition to its ‘pros’ list which outshines all its other attributes; it can save lives.

The Drinkable Book is the result of revolutionary chemical engineering technology, which could save millions of people dying from drinking unclean water.

The paper pages in the Drinkable Book are effective enough to remove 99.9 per cent of bacteria from drinking water.

The book could help save some of the 3.4 million people who die each year from waterborne diseases.

Produced by charity WaterforLife each book contains sanitation advice on each page which when torn out of the book acts like a coffee filter to remove harmful bacteria from drinking water.

Dr Theresa Danovich, a chemist at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, USA, has pioneered this technology which can purify water for one person for around four years.
