Curtis Signs has marked more than 20 years of using Roland DG technology, with the company crediting reliable hardware, workflow software and aftercare support for helping it expand its large-format print operation.
The relationship began in 2005 with the purchase of a Roland CAMM-1 Pro cutter, which remains in regular use today. The company also continues to operate a Roland SP-540V printer, while its primary production device is now a Roland DG TrueVIS VG3-640 printer/cutter with white ink, used to produce signage and vehicle graphics.
Director Stuart Curtis said the longevity of the equipment has been a key factor in the business’s growth.
“We need equipment that we can trust day in, day out,” he said. “The fact that some of our machines are still running after 20 years says a lot.”
Alongside its hardware investment, Curtis Signs has introduced Roland DG Connect into its workflow, using the software to monitor production and improve media management.
Previously, operators relied on visual checks and manual measurements to estimate how much material remained on a roll before starting a print job. While this approach generally prevented shortages, it added extra time and uncertainty to production planning.
Mr Curtis said the software has improved visibility by allowing the team to see exactly how much material is available before committing to a job.
“Just having that visibility – knowing how much material is left – makes a difference,” he said.
The company reports that the system has reduced guesswork, improved production planning and cut media waste. However, Curtis Signs is continuing to expand its use of the platform, particularly as it works with a wide range of media that each require their own profiles.
“We’re still in the process of using it to its full advantage,” Mr Curtis said. “Because we work across such a wide range of media, setting up profiles for everything takes time – but it’s something we’re continuing to build out.”
He added: “It’s about getting the setup right and being consistent. Once that’s in place, you really start to see the benefit.”
Mr Curtis also highlighted Roland DG’s support services as part of the long-standing relationship, saying: “Aftercare is excellent, and the maintenance plans are very good value.”
Looking ahead, Curtis Signs is exploring the addition of a smaller flatbed printer to expand its capabilities without relocating to larger premises, while continuing to develop its use of Roland DG Connect across its workflow.
