Miller Newsprint, Malta’s primary print provider, has installed a Screen Truepress JET 520NX. The installation is part of the company’s transition to digital newspaper production, in response to falling print volumes and rising sustainability concerns.
Previously reliant on offset presses, the company found that diminishing local newspaper demand made analogue printing increasingly unviable. By moving to digital, it was able to cut costs and reduce environmental impact by printing titles locally rather than importing them. “Digital printing has been a game-changer for us,” said Mark Miller, chief commercial officer at Miller Newsprint. “Producing newspapers locally instead of importing them has significantly reduced costs and improved sustainability.”
When its former inkjet supplier exited the commercial market, Miller Newsprint chose the Truepress JET 520NX for its speed, image quality and ink control. “Its speed and precision are unmatched, and the flexibility it offers in managing ink density has been a significant advantage for our newspaper applications,” added Mr Miller.
The press enables fine control of ink usage by title, improving print clarity while minimising waste. The result is sharper text and images even at reduced ink levels—enhancements particularly valued by older readers. Advanced ink formulation also allows printing on lightweight 45gsm papers with reduced show-through, contributing to a 10% saving in paper use.
This is the third Screen press in the group, and Miller Newsprint says the new installation has delivered immediate benefits. The company is now considering additional Screen equipment as it looks to expand its digital offering to include books, maps and leaflets.
“The Truepress JET 520NX is more than a press; it’s a long-term investment in our ability to meet Malta’s unique market demands sustainably and efficiently,” said Mr Miller. “With Screen’s support, we are confident we can bring unparalleled print quality to our clients and readers.”
