UK-based flexible packaging company Eco Flexibles has reported a doubling of turnover within 18 months of installing two Fujifilm Jet Press FP790 digital presses. The impressive results come as demand for sustainable packaging solutions continues to grow.

The business, which focuses on eco-conscious flexible packaging across the food and wellness sectors, installed its first Jet Press FP790 in June 2023. A second unit followed later that year to meet increased demand. Eco Flexibles was the first customer outside Japan to invest in the platform.

“That was a huge moment for us,” said director Simon Buswell. “We knew we were taking a leap into something that hadn’t been widely proven outside of Japan, but we had complete confidence in Fujifilm and the technology. We were willing to lead the way, and it’s paid off.”

Sustainability is at the core of the business, which had previously used Fujifilm’s Flenex FW water-wash flexo plates. The transition to digital was seen as a natural next step.

“The FP790 fitted right into our business model – no solvents, minimal waste, low energy consumption, and high print quality,” said Mr Buswell. “We’ve met all our environmental targets, and the press has helped us gain work not just from digital competitors, but from the flexo sector too.”

The company, which now runs a 50/50 mix of digital and flexo, says the FP790 has allowed it to accept smaller, more flexible orders while maintaining quality and consistency. Buswell said customer feedback has been strong, particularly as many clients are unaware the work is digitally printed.

Eco Flexibles has also expanded into new markets, including health and wellness, where regulatory demands are high. “We’ve picked up brand new work in areas like collagen powders and mushroom blends,” Mr Buswell added. “We’re also looking at introducing more paper-based packaging and expanding internationally, with North America a likely next step.”

Fujifilm’s global business strategy packaging director, Manuel Schrutt, praised Eco Flexibles’ role as an early adopter. “Their success is a testament both to their vision and ambition, and to the capability of the Jet Press FP790,” he said.
