Designer and educator Oswin Tickler is launching a series of experimental workshops exploring the relationship between creative coding and print production.

Titled “Programming Print Making”, the workshops will combine creative code with a range of print and printmaking processes including Risograph, letterpress, and digital print. The initiative aims to demonstrate new approaches to print while helping participants develop digital skills through coding.

The workshops are designed to make coding more accessible, encouraging participants from different backgrounds and skill levels to explore its creative potential. Using open-source coding languages, attendees will generate imagery that will then be produced as part of a unique printed publication.

Digital print specialist FE Burman is partnering with Mr Tickler to host the digital print workshops and produce the printed works. GF Smith is also supporting the project by supplying paper stock and hosting a showcase event at its London offices.

The workshops build on Mr Tickler’s previous experiments combining code and digital print, including work connected to HP Indigo’s HP Spark software, as well as more recent projects involving screen printing.

Longer term, Mr Tickler hopes to expand the initiative across the UK through partnerships with printers, arts organisations, colleges, and print workshops, with the intention of broadening access to both digital and traditional printmaking techniques.

The creative code and digital print workshops will take place on 19 May, 2 June, and 5 June. A showcase event featuring the outcomes of the workshops will be held on 18 June at 1 Clink Street, London SE1 9DG.

Mr Tickler is a senior lecturer at London College of Communication, part of University of the Arts London. Funding for the workshops was provided through London College of Communication’s Knowledge Exchange Public Engagement and Impact fund.
