Monadnock Paper Mills has named Andrew Manns as its new chief executive officer, completing a long-planned transition set in motion by the late Richard G Verney. Manns steps into the role after three decades with the New Hampshire-based business, which is recognised as the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the US.
Manns joined Monadnock in 1995 as vice president of finance and later became chief financial officer and treasurer. Verney personally asked him to take on the leadership position, marking a continuation of the company’s strategic and cultural direction.
“Richard led with clarity, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right for our employees, customers, and the environment,” said Mr Manns. “It’s an honour and a privilege to step into this role and continue the work he cared so deeply about.”
His appointment comes at a time when the paper and packaging industries are facing increasing pressure from sustainability legislation, supply chain challenges and shifting customer demands. Monadnock says the leadership continuity will support its long-term approach, which combines environmental responsibility with material innovation.
The mill has operated for more than 200 years and remains focused on developing high-quality fibre-based solutions that offer alternatives to plastics. Its Platinum EcoVadis rating places it among the top 1% of companies assessed globally for corporate social responsibility, acknowledging progress in areas such as resource efficiency, emissions reduction, and responsible sourcing.
Recent developments include Renovo, a paper-based alternative to plastic gift cards, designed to offer brands a scalable and environmentally preferable option without compromising durability or print performance. Mr Manns said the company will continue investing in similar developments that reflect market needs.
“We’re focused on developing the next generation of high-quality, fiber-based solutions with the same care and responsibility that have guided us for two centuries,” he added. “I’m excited about what’s ahead for Monadnock.”
Monadnock says its aim is to maintain stability through the transition while reinforcing its commitment to customers, employees and environmental stewardship.
