Canon has unveiled the Colorado XL-series, a new platform of 3.4m printers designed to extend its UVgel technology into the 3.2m graphics production market. Available in roll-to-roll and hybrid configurations, the platform is aimed at signage, décor, point of sale and packaging applications.

The Colorado XL-series includes two models – the XL7 roll-to-roll and the XL7 hybrid printer – and is modular and field-upgradable. Capable of handling a variety of substrates, from vinyl and films to foam board and aluminium composite panels, the machines can accommodate rigid media up to 52mm thick. Print speeds reach 70sqm/hr in quality mode, 106sqm/hr in production mode and up to 211sqm/hr in express mode.

The new platform introduces several technology developments. The UVgel 860 ink set has been optimised for both rigid and flexible applications, offering instant-dry, odourless prints with high durability and colour consistency, said Canon. Updated UVgel 850 printheads feature 4544 nozzles each and built-in monitoring, with only two printheads required to deliver CMYK. The printers also employ UVgel DynamicMotion Control for accurate quality on challenging media.

Curing is enhanced with UVgel FullBeam, a 3.4m wide LED array combined with a mirror system to provide consistent UV light dosing and a

wider colour gamut. Media handling is supported by the new TRIdrive vacuum belt, which uses three rollers and multiple vacuum zones to reduce wrinkling and skewing while ensuring accurate positioning.

Optional features carried over from the existing Colorado M-series include UVgel White, FLXfinish+ for mixed gloss and matte effects, and FLXture for textured finishes such as leather or wood.

Duncan Smith, country director, production at Canon UK & Ireland, said: “This innovative solution brings the proven advantages of our unique UVgel technology to the 3.2m market for the first time, combining it with extensive automation and a modular design that will enable customers to extend their application possibilities into markets such as packaging and décor.”

The Colorado XL-series will be available from early 2026 through Canon’s direct sales and accredited partners.
