Mondi is to build a new biomass power plant at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The plant will raise the site’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90% when it comes online in 2027.

The €120 million (£101.6 million) investment, supported by subsidies from the EU’s Modernisation Fund, will replace the mill’s existing bark boiler and provide a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for the facility and the local community. Mondi SCP already supplies district heating in Ružomberok and will be able to expand this without relying on natural gas once the new plant is operational.

The project is expected to reduce emissions significantly, cutting nitrogen oxide output by 50% and particulate matter by up to 83% compared to the old boiler. The power plant will use residual materials from pulp and paper production as fuel, decreasing landfill waste while increasing renewable energy use. All biomass will come from certified, responsibly managed forests.

“By increasing energy self-sufficiency, the project provides long-term operational resilience and supply reliability, strengthening Mondi’s ability to deliver consistent, high-quality products for its customers while also enhancing cost competitiveness,” said Joachim Grunewald, managing director of Mondi SCP.

The new facility is part of Mondi’s Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability commitments, aimed at reducing emissions and supporting the transition to circular and renewable energy solutions.
