Richard Hollingworth, director, with the DigiBook 200

Hollingworth & Moss, printers and traditional book binders based in Leeds, have installed a DigiBook 200 PUR binder from Morgana Systems.

The unit represents the first venture into PUR binding for the company. The Morgana DigiBook 200 was perfect for the shorter runs undertaken at the company – shorter than undertaken by the typical binder.

Paul Hollingworth, managing director, said, ‘Our core focus is on short and very short run productions. Student thesis and book re-binds are the main source of income into the business. Typically book re-binds and book repairs are required for libraries and the Morgana machine allows us to accommodate this easily.

‘With the ability to switch to manual mode we can slow the machine down to a pace that is workable and allows us to deal with damaged pages and gives us tight control on all machine functionality.  We control the milling of the book spine, which helps us to adjust the amount of adhesion, along with the amount of time the book stays in the system while we create the book block.  Once we have produced the book block we can then add a hard cover to the book if required. This will  help with durability of the book and gives it longer shelf life keeping books on shelves longer within the library.’

The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110 mm to 320 mm and a maximum thickness of 50 mm.  The device can convert from soft back to a hard back covering at the flick of a switch.

Mr Hollingworth added, ‘The small format and convenience of the DigiBook 200 means that we can move it around in the factory as it only requires a three pin connection. Because the glues are contained there is no need for any complex ventilation system. All in all a very flexible system.’
