CPI has expanded its print-on-demand capacity across Europe with an investment in digital production technology from Ricoh. The move is part of a long-term strategy focused on localised, sustainable book manufacturing.

The latest phase of the partnership with Ricoh includes the installation of two Ricoh Pro C9500 colour toner presses, enhancing flexibility and efficiency across CPI’s European operations. The group has previously installed six Ricoh systems across sites in Europe, including its print-on-demand facility in Eastbourne, with additional installations planned.

CPI operates 16 manufacturing plants across the UK, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain, supplying both major publishing houses and self-publishing authors. Its zero-inventory production model places a strong emphasis on speed, consistency, and quality, particularly as demand grows for shorter, more responsive book runs.

According to Martin Collyer, divisional general manager at CPI UK, the investment supports the group’s goal of bringing production closer to customers while reducing waste and turnaround times. The new systems will enable more efficient production of both colour and monochrome books and contribute to a lower environmental footprint.

Simon Wheeler, strategic account director at Ricoh UK, said: “CPI has been a key partner for Ricoh across Europe, pushing the boundaries of automation, workflow and print-on-demand innovation. This next phase of their investment demonstrates the shared vision we have – delivering reliable, flexible and sustainable book production solutions for publishers.”
