Stephen Malyon, One Source’s ICT printing services manager, with the KAS Mailmaster Eclipse

Set up five years ago by Havering and Newham councils to combine their back office, printing and mailing services, One Source has bought a second KAS Mailmaster envelope inserter from KAS Paper Systems.

The KAS Mailmaster Eclipse is configured with five insert stations, an overhead feeder, 2D barcode camera reading and the KAS Datalog document tracking and mailing integrity checking system.

‘Since our inception, One Source has enabled the councils to make significant savings. This has now meant we could invest in higher end machines like the Mailmaster Eclipse with the latest technology designed to improve productivity and security,’ said Stephen Malyon, One Source’s ICT printing services manager.

The department has Canon and Océ digital printers and a Presstek 34DI litho press, together with a comprehensive range of finishing equipment. The first KAS Mailmaster, which was a five station 465HS, was installed nine years ago at the London Borough of Newham and moved to One Source, which is located at Havering council’s premises in Romford. ‘This inserter has given us first class, reliable service over all those years and is still going strong,’ Mr Malyon continued. ‘It has outlived three desktop inserters, which have run alongside it, so when we came to replace the last one, we decided to upgrade to a bigger machine.’

The Mailmaster Eclipse, which is the latest envelope inserter from KAS, is a comprehensive, modular, open track, touch screen controlled enveloping system, offering flexibility, durability and ease of set up and inserts at speeds of up to 8000 completed DL to C4 envelopes an hour.

‘It comes into its own when we have to send the annual council tax demands. Both Mailmasters are working flat out folding and inserting into 220,000 envelopes over four days. Last year we mailed a total of 1.93 million envelopes but this year we expect it to increase to 2 million.’

He continued, ‘Data integrity is becoming increasingly important, particularly when we send out parking fines, council tax summons notices etc. where we need an audit trail. This is where the Datalog document tracking and mailing integrity checking system is going to prove invaluable because it will give us the time, date and job reference number of every process in case there is a challenge. Looking to the future, we have to keep up with demand, so we will be working closely with KAS to ensure that we have the latest technology.’
